My Flat-tops 350th

My Flat-tops 350th

Postby PAR on Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:45 pm

I`ve only built two aircraft carriers, the USS Guadalcanal(CVE60),and HMS Invincible 1980.The CVE 60 is from the horrendously expensive Hasegawa kit of the Gamiber Bay,along with all their PE ,it came to close to £230.I shall not be getting many Hasegawa kits in the future! The Vinny is a conversion of the Airfix Illustrious kit .It required many mods to backdate it to 1980,too numerous to mention here ,however if you would like to see how I did it go here:

But the big question is are the Hasegawa kit worth the extra expense

If the recent Academy and Zvezda releases are anything to go by then no, IMO. Great builds by the way Phil.

It would have to be something really special to get me to buy another Hasegawa ship kit,for example a Town or Colony class cruiser(fat chance!),even then I`d have to think long and hard about it.When I first bought the CVE kit ,I thought it would at least contain some basic PE,but it didn`t ,even the lattice mast was solid plastic ,so I had to buy all their PE,which added another £100 to the basic kit price. If I had of known about this ,in all probability, not bought it.

I must say that I love the Hasegawa kits I have. But honestly, they are a bit bare without the etch. I look at the extra sets as something necessary. And even if my Akagi costed around £450, it is a beautiful kit. My Trumpeter Hornet or Essexes will probably end on something similar, with GMM/WEM etch sets, new AA and so on. And the end result will probably not be as good.
Hasegawa kits are expensive, but they are for the enthusiast. And even without the the super sets, they usually build up to beautiful models.

Each to their own ,Denstore.I found that the quality of moulding on this particular kit very heavy ,especially the plating on the hull, and I was a little disappointed with it.As they seem to conscentrate on ships of the IJN ,which I don`t build, I doubt whether I`ll buy any more.

Of course Phil. But for people like me, that are a bit lazy, the superset upgrade concept is perfect. I buy a kit that if I'm careful can reach museum quality level results.
I havn't seen the CVE, but the Nagata, Yahagi and Akagi are beautiful kits.
Maybe the Japanese ships get more attention.

Regards,
Magnus
